Freshwater Fisheries Research

Freshwater fisheries biologists provide analyses of freshwater fish and invertebrate species in Florida lakes, fish management areas, rivers, and streams.

The health and sustainability of Florida’s diverse aquatic resources are important to residents and visitors alike. Tourists spend more than $50 billion per year in our state. Many of these vacationers come specifically to enjoy our freshwater lakes and rivers. The estimated economic contribution of freshwater fishing alone is $1.4 billion per year. Many of Florida’s wildlife species also depend on healthy freshwater ecosystems for their survival. To help maintain Florida’s freshwater resources, the Freshwater Fisheries Research Section of the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) collects freshwater fishery, invertebrate, and habitat data; objectively analyzes them; and provides the results to managers in the FWC and federal, state, county, and local agencies. This information is also made available to the public.

The Freshwater Fisheries Research Section is composed of the Freshwater Fisheries Biology and Freshwater Fisheries Resource Assessment subsections. The section focuses on providing decision-makers with scientifically based assessments and advice about aquatic resources. Research priorities are continuously reevaluated based on input from FWC and other freshwater fishery and habitat managers.
