Nongame Wildlife Grants Program

Information about Nongame Wildlife Grants Program

The Nongame Wildlife Grants Program (NWGP) provides competitive grants for research, management, and education projects that benefit the state’s nongame wildlife species. Projects must include a clear, specific description of the anticipated benefits to nongame species in Florida. The Program Guidelines (95 KB) include detailed instructions for the proper preparation and submission of proposals and program information.

A list of previously funded projects can be viewed in Supplement 4. Information on the status of project reviews can be viewed under Proposal Status or by contacting the program.

Note: The file Program Guidelines is in a PDF format, and requires Adobe Acrobat Reader to view.

Project Eligibility

Any research, management, or education projects relating to Florida’s nongame wildlife may be considered for funding.

Research projects may examine the biology of individual species, populations, and communities; management, inventories, and monitoring techniques; habitat analysis or other areas in theoretical and applied research. For trial periods, management projects may temporarily implement new or redesigned management techniques to enhance nongame wildlife populations or habitats. This is to determine the benefits, costs, efficiency, and practicality of the technique. Education projects may involve the development of high-quality educational programs and materials that foster an awareness of and appreciation for responsible constructive behavior on behalf of nongame wildlife.

The program may announce the availability of, or solicit applications for the following types of grants:

General Grants
Available for projects in a broadly defined area where specific information required by the FWC has not been fully identified. Though not required, projects should address one of the General Areas of Interest outlined in the Program Guidelines (95 KB)and may be awarded additional credit during the evaluation phase.

Targeted Grants
Targeted to a specific prequalified applicant that possesses the specialized knowledge, skills, and capabilities to perform the work required to address a specific FWC need.

Limited Request for Proposals
Issued to solicit proposals from prequalified applicants who have specific qualifications or knowledge of the subject matter is required. Registered, prequalified applicants will be notified of LRFPs that fall within their area of expertise.

The FWC encourages projects limited to a 3-year duration. Requests for extensions and/or budgetary increases to ongoing projects must be submitted at the same time and in the same format as new proposals and will compete for available NWGP funds. Applicants are encouraged to use wildlife management areas and other state-managed lands as potential study sites.

Who May Submit Proposals

Proposals are accepted from those affiliated with state or private colleges, universities, school systems, and other education facilities; industry, research, and other profit or nonprofit organizations; federal, state, and local governmental agencies; and unaffiliated persons prequalified under 68A-2.015 F.A.C. to receive an FWC grant. Proposals may be submitted from other states and countries as long as the proposed projects involve populations of nongame wildlife that inhabit Florida.

When to Submit Proposals

General Grant Proposals
The FWC will announce the application submission dates for General Grant proposals by issuing an announcement or call for proposals at least 60 days prior to the submission deadline. Interested applicants may contact the NWGP at any time for information on current and future funding cycles. Consideration may be given to proposals received from international applicants if postmarked before the deadline.

Requests for Proposals and Targeted Grants
Proposals for projects specified by the NGWP may be requested and awarded at any time through advertised RFPs or through targeted grants as allowed under the FWC’s grant-issuing authority per 68A-2.015 F.A.C.

NOTE: Any proposal received by the NWGP after the deadline, which is not in response to an RFP, will be returned to the project director for resubmission during the next funding cycle.
