Fish and Wildlife Forensic ProgramThe Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) works in conjunction with the FWC Law Enforcement Division to develop and implement forensic techniques in support of law enforcement operations. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) Fish and Wildlife Forensics Program uses procedures that enable FWC staff to exercise and enforce management of Florida’s fish and wildlife resources. The program also employs basic and applied sciences in enforcement of the FWC’s Florida Wildlife Code and assists other projects needing forensic support. The program relies on the FWC’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) and external experts to provide training and support to law enforcement officers, investigators, scientists, and other experts. The program enables professionals to participate in forensic investigations at different levels. FWC staff members use program procedures to identify, collect, and process biological evidence. These guidelines and forensic activities are often used in the field by a first responder. The guidelines also provide a system where specific needs can be addressed by specially trained personnel. FWC specialists offer expertise in areas such as crime scene investigations and state-of-the-art biological- and laboratory-based forensic identifications. Additionally, the program is affiliated with many forensic specialists, examiners, and trainers as well as a number of state and federal law enforcement organizations. These organizations provide forensic services that are currently unavailable within the FWC, as well as program assistance. |
