Stone Crab Fishery-Independent Monitoring Program Annual Report 2006

Data on catch, sizes, and other fisheries-related aspects of the stone crab monitoring program at FWRI.

To improve the collection of data on the stone crab population in Florida, the Stone Crab Advisory Board recommended development of a monitoring program for the stone crab fishery. The monitoring program began in the southwest region in January 2005 and in the northwest region in February 2006. In addition, Fish and Wildlife Research Institute staff has a long-term sampling location in the Tampa Bay area. The program is supported by stone crab fishery licensing funds and provides the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the State of Florida with much-needed data for evaluating the overall condition of stone crab populations and the stone crab fishery. These data will greatly enhance the FWC’s ability to properly manage this fishery because FWC can be responsive to management and data needs identified by industry representatives
