Red Drum—Biscayne Bay

You can help researchers learn more about red drum. This article will tell you the information scientists need if you catch a tagged or untagged red drum.

OBSERVE CURRENT FISHING REGULATIONS

  • Daily recreational bag limit is one fish between 18 and 27 inches per person per day.

NON-TAGGED REDFISH

  • Record capture location, capture date and time, total length, and angler name, address, and telephone number.
  • If you keep your catch (18”–27”), we need the carcass or fin clip. Place in a plastic bag and keep on ice or freeze.
  • If you release your catch, we need a fin clip. Place the fin clip in a plastic bag and keep on ice or freeze.
  • Report capture information to the Angler Tag Return Hotline 1-800-367-4461 or tagreturn@MyFWC.com.
  • Take the capture information and the carcass or fin clip to one of the participating bait shops listed below.
TAGGED REDFISH
  • Record tag number, capture location, capture date and time, total length, angler name/address/telephone number.
  • If you release your catch, do not remove the external tag and take a fin clip. Place the fin clip in a plastic bag and keep on ice or freeze.
  • If you keep your catch (18"–27"), we need the tag and a fin clip or the carcass. Please place in a plastic bag and keep on ice or freeze.
  • Report capture information to the Angler Tag Return Hotline 1-800-367-4461 or tagreturn@MyFWC.com.
  • Take the capture information and the carcass or fin clip to one of the participating bait shops listed at the end of this article.
FIN CLIP GUIDELINES
  • To receive a free fin clip kit, contact FWC at the Angler Tag Return Hotline 1-800-367-44461 or tagreturn@MyFWC.com. Please provide your name, address, and telephone number.
  • Clip a nickel-sized piece of tissue from the top end of the tail fin (tissue grows back). Wrap in foil and place in a plastic bag. Keep on ice or freeze. Take the capture information and fin clip to one of the participating bait shops as soon as possible.
