Recent Projects / Interview Body

What are you working on now?

I am involved in a major bay scallop restoration project on the Florida west coast, a hard clam population enhancement projects on the east coast, and a project to track marine invertebrate larvae in an attempt to elucidate the life history of this critical phase in bivalve development. Other studies focus on invasive green mussels in Tampa Bay and studies of calico scallop habitat requirements.

What would you say is your biggest accomplishment?

Besides raising three kids? Working full-time and getting a doctorate at the same time was pretty satisfying. I am also pleased with my success in developing the Molluscan Fisheries program at FMRI and my publication record.

What do you like most about your career?

Learning new things and spending time on the water although I spend less time on the water than I would like these days.

What do you like least about your career?

Administrative duties.

What are some of your biggest challenges?

Keeping my project funded, keeping my employees happy and productive, and doing good science.

What advice would you give to someone interested in pursuing a career in your field?

You can make a good living but you won't get rich. Get as much education as possible, get as much experience as early as possible, and make sure you enjoy reading because you will be reading a lot.
