Alligator Research Group Volunteer Program

The volunteer's primary responsibility will be to assist researchers with radio tracking juvenile alligators.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) Alligator Research Group is looking for motivated volunteers to serve for the upcoming spring-summer session in Gainesville.

The volunteer’s primary responsibility will be to assist researchers working on the Lake Apopka North Shore Restoration Project with tracking alligators in the north marsh on Lake Apopka located in Lake and Orange counties. The principle aim of this study is to document juvenile alligator movements between impoundments during different seasons. The volunteer will collect and record movement data in the field, assist with night light surveys, and captures of additional alligators. Other duties include equipment maintenance, miscellaneous office tasks, and public outreach as needed. Opportunities to conduct other herptofauna (reptile) surveys are likely.

Volunteers are expected to work a minimum of two days a month in the field; however the schedule is relatively flexible. The majority of the work will be done at night, as alligators are a nocturnal species. Volunteers should understand that this job requires them to be wet, dirty, and outdoors in all weather conditions. Transportation and lodging will be provided in the field.

Qualifications:

  • Must have basic computer proficiency
  • Some field research experience with data collection on animals preferred
  • Must be comfortable speaking to the public
  • Ability to trailer boats and operate watercraft up to 22-feet in length preferred
  • Experience with radio telemetry tracking gear is desirable, but training can be provided
  • Preference given to applicants who possess a valid U.S. driver's license
  • Ability to work during nighttime hours
