Key Largo Cotton Mouse Internship

The Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) seek applicants for fall and winter internships for FWRI’s Terrestrial Mammal Research Program in Panama City.

Interns will assist researchers with estimating population size of the endangered Key Largo cotton mice through mark and recapture techniques. Data will be collected on the northern areas of Key Largo from approximately December 6 - 20, 2009. Because the animals are nocturnal, a majority of the work will be conducted during early morning and evening hours.

A final project (paper, poster, or Microsoft PowerPoint presentation) will be required. Check with your department advisor to determine if college credit is possible.

Qualifications:

  • Current college students and recent graduates are eligible.
  • Prior field research experience desired, but not required.
  • Ability to work independently and in a group setting.
  • Literacy in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Previous experience handling animals is desired but not necessary.
  • Must possess a valid U.S. Class D driver's license.
  • Job requires interns to be outdoors in all weather conditions.

If you are interested in applying for an internship with the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, the following information is required:

  1. A cover letter describing area(s) of interest and the dates, days, and hours of availability.
  2. A résumé describing training and experience.
  3. An unofficial copy of your academic transcript.
  4. Contact information for three references.
