Provides a summary of the twelve boating restriction seagrass protection zones in Florida established prior to January 1998. These zones were established by different resource managers who did not coordinate their efforts, so a summary of the regulatory authority, extent, and enforcement are given.

Seagrass distribution maps were not available for the area of Cape Sable to Sanibel. Seagrass distribution was interepreted from 1987 natural color aerial photographs (scale 1:24,000). Distribution was mapped on standard 1:24,000 USGS maps and digitized.

From 1996-99, aerial photos showed a loss of more than 2000 acres, essentially negating the gains of the previous decade. The grant will finance intensive monitoring and experimental plantings to determine the cause of the seagrass declines in designated problem areas.

In the Charlotte Harbor Aquatic Preserves, seagrass monitoring is one of the most important tools used to help assess the health of the estuaries. Seagrass is used an indicator species linking water quality & habitat health, as reflected by light availability in the water column.
