Project Name Project Type Agency Technique Status
2003 Acquisition of Aerial Photography of the Florida Panhandle Estuaries Survey FWC Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI), US Geological Survey Aerial Photography Completed
Acquired 1:24,000 natural color aerial photography in October 2003.
A summary of limited vessel entry zones for managed Seagrass Protection in Florida Education FWC Bureau of Protected Species Education-publication Completed
Provides a summary of the twelve boating restriction seagrass protection zones in Florida established prior to January 1998. These zones were established by different resource managers who did not coordinate their efforts, so a summary of the regulatory authority, extent, and enforcement are given.
Aerial Photography from Pensacola to Florida Bay (1980) Mapping National Wetlands Research Center, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Aerial photos Completed
In 1980, aerial photos (1:24,000, natural color) were taken of seagrass on Florida's Gulf Coast. The intended comprehensive photointerpretation and mapping by EPA and NWRC were not conducted due to lack of funding.
Apalachicola Bay Seagrass Mapping by Aerial Photos (1992) Mapping US Geological Survey Aerial photos Completed
Using aerial photographs, seagrass distribution was determined and digitized for the Apalachicola Bay area.
Apalachicola River-East Bay Seagrass Mapping (1980) Mapping FWC Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI), US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), US Fish and Wildlife Service Aerial photos Completed
Natural color aerial photography from 1980 at the scale of 1:24,000 was used to map seagrasses of Florida's East Bay of the Apalachicola River. The classification scheme addressed areas with varying amounts of seagrass coverage. Photointerpretation and mapping was performed, and maps were digitized.
Benthic Habitat Mapping of Apalachicola Bay (1999) Mapping Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Acoustic transects Active
Used a sediment profiling imagery (SPI) camera, traditional benthic sampling, and acoustic sensing to map seagrass distribution in Apalachicola Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve.
Blacks Island Mitigation-Seagrass Buoys Buoys/Signs Private developer Buoys Active
A power cable is planned to extend from mainland to an island, crossing seagrass beds in an aquatic preserve. Installation is planned using the imbedding technique. As mitigation, consultant will place buoys to keep boats away from seagrass beds.
Blacks Island Prop Scar Mitigation Monitoring Private developer Fill prop scar, monitor for recolonization Active
As mitigation, consultant will survey by boat to locate 29,000 linear feet of prop scar damage, establish a baseline to determine changes in elevation and type of sediment to use. Prop scars will be filled to bring elevations up to grade, and seagrasses are expected to re-colonize.
Boating and Angling Guide Series Education FWC Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) Brochure Active
Since 1992, FMRI has been producing a statewide series of educational boating and angling guides that also provide information about Florida's ecosystems. Features and information include marina locations, boat ramps, artificial reefs, and natural resources such as seagrasses.
Boating and Angling Guide to Apalachicola Bay Education Apalachicola National Estuary Research Reserve, Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), FWC Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) Brochure Completed
Provides maps showing waters of the Apalachicola Bay system. Features and information include marina locations, boat ramps, artificial reefs, and natural resources such as seagrasses.
Boating and Angling Guide to Choctawhatchee Bay Education FWC Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI), NW Florida Aquatic Preserves Brochure Completed
Provides maps showing waters of the Choctawhatchee Bay system. Features and information include marina locations, boat ramps, artificial reefs, and natural resources such as seagrasses.

Boating and Angling Guide to St. Andrew Bay Education FWC Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI), NW Florida Aquatic Preserves Brochure Completed
Provides maps showing waters of the St. Andrew Bay system. Features and information include marina locations, boat ramps, artificial reefs, and natural resources such as seagrasses.
Boating and Angling Guide to St. Joseph Bay Education Florida DEP Coastal and Aquatic Managed Areas (CAMA), FWC Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) Brochure Completed
Provides maps showing waters of St. Joseph Bay and Indian Pass. Features and information include marina locations, boat ramps, artificial reefs, and natural resources such as seagrasses.
Comprehensive Seagrass Monitoring of St. Andrew Bay Monitoring Gulf Coast Community College Active
Seagrass coverage in St. Andrew Bay has been on the decline since 1964. Seagrasses are also damaged by boat propellers, but no one knows why so many acres of seagrasses have been lost. Ongoing seagrass monitoring is being combined with light attenuation to examine water quality effects on seagrass.
