Provides a summary of the twelve boating restriction seagrass protection zones in Florida established prior to January 1998. These zones were established by different resource managers who did not coordinate their efforts, so a summary of the regulatory authority, extent, and enforcement are given.

In 1980, aerial photos (1:24,000, natural color) were taken of seagrass on Florida's Gulf Coast. The intended comprehensive photointerpretation and mapping by EPA and NWRC were not conducted due to lack of funding.

Biscayne Bay Seagrass Monitoring I Monitoring South Florida Water Management District 12 fixed stations Active
Monitoring of Biscayne Bay's seagrass based on monthly sampling along twelve fixed stations to determine shoot and blade density, standing biomass by species, and seagrass composition.
Biscayne Bay Seagrass Monitoring II Monitoring South Florida Water Management District 102 random stations Active
To supplement Biscayne Bay Seagrass Monitoring I, which used twelve fixed stations, added scattered random stations in 100 regions of the bay. Water quality was taken at each station and visual density was estimated, using the Braun-Blanquet technique.
Biscayne Bay Signage Project Signage South Florida Water Management District Install markers Active
At the request of the Biscayne Bay Partnership Initiative and other parties, the 2001 Legislature appropriated $50,000 to the SFWMD for the purpose of markers and signage to protect seagrasses and manatees and to educate the public.
